tiki-taka drill

One-week microcycle to train quick passing

Rather than a vague praise of possession football, this plan gives three focused sessions that build the movement, tempo and positional awareness that underpin the style. Use small-sided constraints, measurable reps and clear progressions so players experience success quickly.

  • Session 1 — Speed and touch (60 minutes): 15 min warm-up rondo (3v1 → 4v2), 20 min 3-touch passing grid (timed circuits), 15 min overload possession game. Coaching cue: punish heavy first touches; reward correct body shape.
  • Session 2 — Positional rotations (60 minutes): 20 min pattern passing with target zones, 20 min 5v4 with neutral players to encourage shifts, 15 min controlled scrimmage emphasizing wide support. Coaching cue: move for the passer, not the ball.
  • Session 3 — Press resistance (60 minutes): 15 min high-intensity rondo, 25 min transition games (win ball → 6-pass sequence to score), 15 min full practice match with restricted touches. Coaching cue: scan before receiving; play one or two touches under pressure.

Common mistakes: overcomplicating patterns, ignoring vertical options, or expecting perfect technique instantly. Fix them with shorter drills, timed constraints and immediate feedback.

Takeaway: build the habit through high-rep, game-like drills, measure small improvements each week, and prioritise scanning, body shape and one-touch mentality over fancy patterns.
